ALM 03

Buenas,

No one can argue that TOP GEAR is the best car tv show ever. Now I’ll explain you why:

For a long time, car programs were changing the dynamics of the presenters until it became a little drinking shows. Not misunderstood me, when I see a beatiful woman talking about cars, I really enjoy it, but if the program has no content it is a bad show I’m sorry. And most of the times, they also displays only reviews and details of a car and nothing more.

Top Gear took us back to the origins, back to the bases. Many of which we like the cars, we like because when we see them or drive them we feel again like a 10 year’s old boy. I want to see a beautiful woman on TV, but I much more prefer to see a guy of 40 years driving a Bugatti Veyron on a track of aircraft and to challenge a fighter to see who is faster. Or see how 3 people, are with a beer in their hands and decide that a Chevrolet Corvette is better than a Audi R8, only because it has less support for driver and driving one of those is a confirmed suicide. In short, is a program where you have a car that costs $250000 and who has 500 HPs as a toy and treat it as such.

You sure you’re thinking that this is one of those lucky Tuesdays where I have lunch drinking a couple of vodka shots; and why in a technology and ALM blog I’m speaking about Top Gear. The answer is very simple and is based on the phrase that I used a couple of paragraphs before: “back to the origins“.

In the case of ALM tools, sources have to be simple, focused on a goal that delivers value and also fun. Over the years I have seen as different tools evolved without much concrete direction and with a level of complexity that scared me. In many cases, merely “leading and tracking a project” was more complicated than the project itself.

The problem in these cases is that the work is no longer fun; and when your work does not attract you; is most probably that the quality of your work is near to zero or negative. Then, why complicate the way that we create software? Or worse yet, why complicate the tools with which we make software? If they are which should help us to work better.

Note: let’s speak clear with a simple example: the hammer. I’m quite sure that “James Hammer” the inventor of the hammer, when he tied a stone to a stick, did not do so to be able to better brushing your teeth; but with another goal in mind.

In the same way, if we have a suite of tools to manage projects and make software, do need we make them? Or use them for something what have not been created? When I see examples of how enlightened have evolved some hammers, and now in addition to drive nails, hammers are also to play Tetris and listen to music from Spotify, I get depressed.

So, dear reader I leave the following sentence to remember my mother, grandmother or higher:

Do you really need all that you’re using to give value to your work?

If it is not, chances are you may need to change your tools (Visual Studio 2012 ALM is an excellent choice) and watch a few episodes of Top Gear to enjoy as a dwarf.
